Are we healthy because the city is walkable? Or is the city walkable because we’re healthy? It’s a dumb question, but one we asked ourselves when Vancouver was named the most walkable city in Canada by the real estate brokerage Redfin. For the record, we ask that question because we’re number 1 in Canada, but Victoria didn’t even crack the top 5.

Redfin used a variety of factors to determine a walkability score out of 100. Basically, the higher the score, the easier it becomes to accomplish daily tasks without the use of a car. At a score of 79.8, Vancouver is far and away the most walkable city in Canada.

Some of the factors highlighted by Redfin were our impressive transit system and an emphasis on developments that support walkability around the city. To accomplish this, developers have created ‘mini-villages’ that feature most of the amenities needed on a daily basis.

We’re not perfect though, because apparently American cities are much more walkable. New York City, the top city in the US, scored an impressive 88. Fair enough- the city truly is a concrete jungle.
