This whirlpool in Ontario is one of the world’s most mesmerizing natural phenomena

Ontario is home to one of the most fascinating natural phenomena and you’ll find it in the Niagara Gorge. Here’s what to know about the incredible Niagara Glen.

About two hours away from Toronto is the Niagara Glen, a pristine pocket of the Carolinian Forest.

According to Niagara Parks, it is located “deep in the Niagara Gorge” and to get there, you’ll need to head along the stairways that lead to four kilometres of hiking paths.

You’ll trek through the Carolinian Forest, past prehistoric geological formations, and wild flora and fauna.

Then you’ll eventually get to the captivating Niagara River Whirlpool.

This natural wonder is at the end of the rapids where the Niagara Gorge abruptly turns counterclockwise.

“The river’s abrupt change of direction creates one of the world’s most mesmerizing natural phenomena,” says Niagara Parks.

Picture yourself standing at its edge, marvelling at the powerful rapids and the whirlpool’s mesmerizing movement. It’s pretty exquisite!

As you venture deeper into the Niagara Glen, you’ll discover a living history book dating back 400 million years.

This enchanted forest is one of the last strongholds of the old-growth Carolinian Forest in the Niagara region.

“One of the last remaining remnants of old growth Carolinian Forest in Niagara, the Niagara Glen features some of the largest trees of their kind and is home to approximately 490 species of vulnerable plants and animals,” shares the tourist site.

Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon ancient fossils from when this land was submerged beneath an ancient sea.

Also worth noting is that these trails are open from sunrise to sunset, but because of the forest canopies and elevation in some areas, it may get darker sooner than expected.

Be careful and enjoy the trails!
