The new NHL affiliate team got a wicked city to call home
We’re sure that everyone is well aware of the newest addition to the National Hockey League, but their pick for where their AHL affiliate will be located might come as a surprise. Seattle has announced that their AHL team will be located in Palm Springs. Snowbirds, you’re welcome!
The Sonoran Desert city has a population of 50,000 or so people. Known for boutique shopping, golf courses, and spas, it wasn’t exactly our first guess for the AHL’s latest team. Palm Springs hockey isn’t really quite a thing yet. Although, we’re sure the players won’t be too upset about playing there. Rough deal, man. Pro sports and palm trees.

The announcement comes from the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and Oak View Group, who want to build a privately-funded arena on tribal land. It is anticipated that the arena will seat around 10,000 people.
Now that we think about it, it kind of makes sense. We’ve got some pals who love to visit Palm Springs in the winter. We wish we were one of them, but alas, the summer-year-round lifestyle ain’t cheap. Get a round of golf in and watch some good old hockey? Sounds pretty ideal!
We really want them to have a cool name, though. We’re thinking the Palm Springs Roadrunners. Palm Spring Palm Trees. Palm Springs Hockey Retirees. What do you guys think?
