From HBO’s The Last Of Us to Fraggle Rock, YYC will be showing up all over screens big and small in the next few. Being able to watch the Director’s Guild of Canada website constantly being updated with new productions no matter the size is incredibly validating. It means that other people are starting to notice how much YYC and our surrounding areas have to offer! The fact of the matter is that we have a bright future ahead of us, folks – so it was only a matter of time until another big company saw the light! This summer, expect to see more camera and action when an adaption of Jon Krakauer’s true crime novel Under the Banner of Heaven starts rolling right here in Calgary!

Allegedly picked up by Imagine Entertainment and FX, Under the Banner of Heaven will delve into the gruesome 1984 murder of Brenda Lafferty and her infant daughter Erica.

Taken too soon by her brothers-in-law, Ron and Dan Lafferty (who believe that they were receiving messages from God), this bone-chilling story is one of polygamy, delusional, and violence.

To be frank, this story is a pretty dark one and in order for it to really resonate, they’re going to need an incredible writer – and, wouldn’t you know it, they struck gold.

The series, which is set to begin filming at the beginning of August, will actually be written by Acadamy Award-winning filmmaker, Dustin Lance Black (confirmed by his official website), best known for J. Edgar (starring Leonardo DiCaprio) and Milk (starring Sean Penn and James Franco).

Speaking of Black’s website, it states that he will be a Screenwriter and Executive Producer for the FX series, while the legendary Ron Howard is slated to direct. Now, Howard has been attached to this project for a decade, but we’ll have to wait and see if the superstar will indeed be at the helm of the Calgary-shot series. According to the Director’s Guild of Canada, filming is scheduled to take place between August 3rd and November 1st, 2021.

Needless to say, we think that this is going to be a pretty big one, folks – so keep your eyes peeled!

As of right now, there’s no word on who will star in the series but we can only assume that we’ll be pleasantly surprised. We’ll keep you all updated, but until then – go and be proud, Calgary. We live in a pretty dope city.
