Every year, the Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival (VOAF) brings together dozens of exhibits, workshops, live performances, and visual art installations for visitors to peruse. Selected artists are often individuals/groups facing social exclusion in Vancouver – and self-identify as “outsider” artists. So, if you’re looking for an inclusive space to engage in the local art scene, this is a fantastic opportunity to do it.

Jin-me Yoon: About Time

Speaking of art, The Vancouver Art Gallery presents a new exhibition starting this weekend featuring award-winning Vancouver artist, Jin-me Yoon. His exceptional work is distinguished by a “poetic, cinematic aesthetic,” according to a media release – and will incorporate photography, video, and installation. The exhibit will run from Saturday, October 15th to Match 5th.

Frozen River (nîkwatin sîpiy)

This Sunday, October 16th is the last day to check out Carousel Theatre’s production, nîkwatin sîpiy – Aka, Frozen River. The award-winning story follows two 11-year-olds (Wâpam, who is Cree, and Eilidh, who is Scottish) born under the same blood moon, but in different parts of the world. Grandmother Moon narrates the tale, which unfolds from the ancient forests of the past to present-day Manitoba. Written by Michaela Washburn, Joelle Peters, and Carrie Costello – nîkwatin sîpiy explores how reconciliation efforts and environmentalism are connected in a family-friendly play appropriate for all ages.

Autumn pop-up market

And last but not least, we have a fall-themed pop-up market courtesy of Made in the 604. Over 70 local vendors are coming to The Pipe Shop in North Van on Sunday, October 16th. So mark your calendars, and get ready for some great finds! Admission is free and the venue is dog-friendly.
