This wilderness park in BC has an elevated lake with a sandy spit

If you’re looking to spend some quality time in the rugged wilderness without venturing too far from Vancouver, it’s time to visit the expansive Tantalus Park just north of Squamish, which is home to some of the mountain town’s most dramatic peaks.

The 113-square-kilometre park has an elevated sub-alpine lake that’s aptly named Lake Lovely Water – which sits 3,800 feet above sea level. And while it’s a trek to reach its stunning waters, the journey rewards those who brave it with 360-degree views of the surrounding old-growth forest, towering mountains, and glaciers.

The par is a popular spot for fishing, helicopter-assisted hiking, climbing, and advanced backcountry skiing during the winter months, according to Tourism Squamish.

Campers can access tent pads or book one of the Jim Haberl or Tantalus Huts via the Alpine Club of Canada.

The lake can be accessed by boat, followed by a rugged 6.5-kilometre hike that takes approximately 4 to 6 hours to complete. Alternatively, visitors can be dropped off at the lake via Blackcomb Helicopters or Black Tusk Helicopter Inc.

BC Parks notes that there is no roped-off swimming area, but swimming in the lake’s cool alpine waters is permitted nonetheless.

There’s a small dock located near the Alpine Club of Canada cabin, as well as a sandy spit.

Note that wilderness camping is permitted at 15 designated tent sites only.

According to BC Parks, high temperatures and rapid snow melt have led to unpredictable water flow and levels, so be extra cautious at river crossings!

So there you have it, adventurers. Are you up for the trek?!
