Vancouver is certainly no stranger to a good bagel, and with new Japanese-style bagels already on the way, it looks like the scene is really taking off this year. But we have to say, the closure of Benny’s Bagels in Kitsilano (and later their warehouse location in East Van) was a great loss for many, including Vancouver native Ryan Reynolds.
Like many, Reynolds grew up on Benny’s Bagels, flitting between local food spots on Macdonald Street after school at Kitsilano Secondary.
Now, joining Aviation Gin, Mint Mobile, and bid to buy the Ottawa Senators is a new business venture that leans heavily on the ‘neighbourhood bagel shop’ concept that Reynolds is so fond of.
Enter “Ryan’s Bagels.”

“I’ve always wanted to get into the food scene in Vancouver, and now feels like the perfect time to do it,” says the actor and business mogul in a recent interview. “To open a bagel shop in my home city, a place known for having amazing food options already, would be a great honour and challenge.”
People in LA are deathly afraid of gluten. I swear to god, you could rob a liquor store in this city with a bagel.

Staying true to his acting roots, the actor also says that the bagelry will offer catering services to local film companies and projects filming across the city.

The bagelry
While details on the bagelry itself are limited, one thing is clear: Ryan’s Bagels is poised to set up shop at 1850 West 4th Avenue, in the spot currently occupied by the OG Trattoria location (closing April 6th). While we’ll certainly miss the pasta & wine deals, we can’t deny that this new development is a game-changer!
As for what’s on the menu, Reynolds hasn’t shared too much info just yet, though he promises a mix of “classic and nostalgic” bagel flavours and cream cheeses, as well as unique toppings to keep things interesting.
The actor’s go-to bagel & cream cheese combo? Apparently an “everything bagel,” which seems fitting considering his many interests & business pursuits. And for cream cheese?
“I think we can all agree that smoked salmon cream cheese is top tier.”
Stay tuned via Reynolds’ socials for the upcoming scoop on Ryan’s Bagels, including an anticipated opening date!
