Toronto winter storm watch has been upgraded to a warning & travel is not advised

Snowfall, blizzard, rainfall, and winter storm warnings are now in effect for many parts of southern Ontario as we head into the holiday weekend. What was a winter storm watch in Toronto, has since been upgraded to a warning by Environment Canada, and here’s what you need to know.

Environment Canada has warned Toronto that travel “will become hazardous and is not advised” as the city currently remains under a winter storm warning. Wind gusts up to 90 km/h are expected, contributing to widespread blowing snow which will reduce visibility to near zero at times, and anticipated snow will change to flurries by Saturday morning.

And don’t forget about the cold. Though we do expect to drop see a drop in temperatures, due to the wind chill, we could see it drop to the minus twenties, according to E.C. And it’s expected to persist into the weekend.

That being said, flash freeze is possible so if you’re out and about, keep an eye out on your surroundings.

Though Canadian weather tends to be unpredictable, meteorologists at The Weather Network have called the anticipated weather event, a ‘generational storm’. And it’s already hitting certain parts of Ontario harder than others.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve,” suggests Environment Canada. “Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.”

Though these warnings can be overwhelming, there’s no need to panic! Make sure you’re warm indoors, away from the cold, and plan your weekend accordingly. The city has opened a few warming shelters for those in need.
