Winter is here – in full force! If you had plans to leave the house on Tuesday you may want to think about staying cozy at home, with two weather alerts issued for Toronto amid the city’s first winter storm of 2024.

Environment Canada has issued a Winter Weather Travel Advisory in effect until this evening, warning drivers of hazardous travel conditions due to the 5-10 CM of snowfall expected today.

According to the advisory, “Difficult travel conditions will be likely once the snow arrives. Motorists should expect hazardous winter driving conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.”

Environment Canada has also issued a Rainfall Warning for 20 to 35 mm and ponding of water on roads starting this afternoon and into the evening or overnight.

The statement warns, “Significant rainfall is expected. The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall.”

“Snow associated with a storm system is expected to move into portions of southern Ontario through the day. The snow will change to rain in the afternoon or early evening.”

It doesn’t look like we’ll be escaping the cold and snow this weekend either, with the forecast showing temperatures dropping to -8°C on both Saturday and Sunday, with a chance of flurries both days as well.
