If you’ve ever been driving around Toronto and came across this building, you’ve probably wondered what it is. The picturesque architecture and massive pillars make it looks like a museum. Or a royal estate. But it turns out it’s actually a water treatment plant. Hmm, the more ya know!
But it’s not a regular water treatment plant. It’s a cool water treatment plant. Cause it’s been the star of a ton of TV shows and movies!
R.C. HARRIS WATER TREATMENT PLANT
The plant is located on the far end of Queen St East. You’ll find it when you drive right up to the water. It was built sometime between 1932-1941. The fact that that date is still unknown makes it extra alluring to go visit. And luckily, you can visit it! Well, not during COVID-19, but normally you can.
Even though the building is practically ancient, it’s still a functioning plant. Today, it supplies about 45% of the city’s water.

Of course, the spot’s real claim to fame is the many TV shows and movies that it’s been used in. You may recognize these grounds from flicks like In the Mouth of Madness, Robocop, Half Baked, Undercover Brother, The Pretender, and Mutant X.
It was even featured as the evil brewery in the cult classic Strange Brew. That movie also features shots of Toronto’s pride and joy (and North America’s only full-sized castle), Casa Loma.
So there ya have it! Who knew this Toronto building was full of so much interesting history? We’ll think of it next time we take a sip of water that may have been treated at this very plant.
