Canada’s first-ever floating festival & ‘smoke sculpture’ are coming to Toronto

Exciting things are coming to Toronto’s waterfront this summer! The Waterfront BIA has revealed its programming lineup for the warmer months ahead and it looks like we’ll be spending a lot of time by the lake this season.

From art installations to festivals to engaging outdoor experiences, there’s a little something for everyone at the waterfront.

Kicking things off is Canada’s first and only floating arts and culture festival, called 100 Days of Summer by Art & Water, running from May 20 to September 5.

“Performances will bring together songwriters, musicians, and other artists from all walks of life to deliver art and culture into the daily lives of Torontonians,” the description says.

Also in May, The Bentway will begin its summer season, called STREET, featuring a series of installations, exhibits, and a big party under the Gardiner Expressway.

Also running until June 5 is the Toronto Biennial of Art, “Canada’s leading visual arts event focused exclusively on contemporary art from around the world.”

As their grand finale, legendary artist Judy Chicago will create her first Smoke Sculpture™ presentation in Canada. On June 4 at 8 p.m., the city is invited to gather at the waterfront for Chicago’s installation, which will release environmentally safe, non-toxic coloured pigments into the air from a barge.

From July to September, Harbour Square will have “striking, thought-provoking” floating art on display.

And to cap off an eventful season along the lake, the  Redpath Waterfront Festival will return on September 17, which will feature both on-land and on-water programs, a giant inflatable beaver, the famous Theodore TOO Tugboat, and plenty of music and food.

Just down the road at Ontario Place, this summer will be busier than ever with the Electric Island concert series, Taco Fest, and Toronto’s first-ever Rolling Loud festival taking over the grounds.

There’s so much to look forward to, we can hardly keep up!
