Tennis fans are in for an exciting summer in Toronto. On Thursday, Tennis Canada announced its new partnership with Empire, unveiling the newly-renamed stadium that will host one of the biggest tennis events in the world this August right here in the city.

The venue, now called Sobeys Stadium, is described as a “multipurpose sports and entertainment complex,” spanning 15 acres in York Region north of Toronto.

Spectators will be able to order food right from their seats and have it delivered without missing a moment of the match.

The stadium will host this year’s National Bank Open presented by Rogers. Toronto will host the women’s event and the men’s event will take place at Montreal’s IGA Stadium.

This tournament has been played since 1881 for men and 1892 for women, and the participants are among the best in the world.

“Only Wimbledon and the US Open have longer histories than this major Canadian stop, which is acknowledged by the tennis world to be one of the best-run tournaments on the professional circuit,” the description says.

Ontario’s own Bianca Andreescu took the singles championship title back in 2019.

This news comes not long after Woodbine Entertainment announced its plans to build a new soccer stadium in Toronto with room for thousands of spectators and a pitch that meets FIFA’s professional standards.

It would be used to not only for national soccer training, but also to host international federations preparing for major events and serve as a training base for Canadian Premiere League teams.

It looks like Toronto is on a mission to become a global leader in the world of pro sports events.
