This new Alberta society is helping make Calgary’s craft beer scene more diverse

“A craft beer industry that is diverse, inclusive, equitable, and accessible.” Given how diversity issues in the Canadian craft beer industry have been surfacing over the past few years, this might seem like a far-fetched thought. A volunteer-run Albertan community organization, the Hop Forward Society, is working towards this very vision. And when someone does something this remarkable, we take notice.

Let us first fill you in on ‘the what’ and ‘the why’ of Hop Forward. 

Formed in the aftermath of the George Floyd murder, the society’s aim is not limited to being a representative of the under-presented disability, BIPOC and LGBTQ2S+ communities. Their goal is to make the craft beer industry a safe space for people of all genders and races to work and grow.

In accordance with this vision, the society acknowledges the many obstacles these communities have faced in the industry and are working towards a positive change. Hop Forward has actually gone ahead to proactively extend support to these communities by way of three annual grants– the Free Pour Grant and the Seasonal Brew Grant (x2).

The Free Pour Grant is a $500 ongoing grant and is aimed at giving deserving people a fair chance at success. It’s basically like a college fund (of sorts) that can be used to kickstart your Cicerone Certification or as continued support.

The Seasonal Brew Grant, meanwhile, is a $1,000 grant intended for projects, education, and research initiatives in the industry. Each year, two of these grants are issued. But they come with a deadline. And the application cut-off this year is March 31 (in case you’re interested).

Now here is the absolute best part− you can support the cause and their initiatives simply by being a part of the community. And you don’t even have to be a craft beer business. While businesses, obviously, have a membership, the society also offers membership to all beer enthusiasts. You know, so you can keep yourself updated with what’s happening in the industry, know about upcoming events, and, of course, taste some of the best local brews.

While realizing their vision is still down a very long road, the society’s efforts are a major step forward for the province’s craft beer industry.
