Winter is just around the corner and before we know it, Ontario’s beautiful landscape will transform into a snowy wonderland. And our beloved small towns and villages will look even more magical with snowy peaks that decorate its rooftops. So on that note, we’ve compiled a list of a few small towns in Ontario that look absolutely magical in the winter.
And no, we’re not talking about those winter days when there’s barely any snow on the ground. We’re talking about those HEAVY snowfalls where the aftermath leaves a wonderful display, almost like a Hallmark movie.
Known as Ontario’s “friendly town,” you can count on a big dose of winter vibes in charming and picturesque Almonte.
The town’s historic Mill Street is so vibrant this time of year.
The scenic mill town on the Mississippi River near Ottawa is full of shops, restaurants, and elegant inns, making it the perfect weekend destination.
This spot is known as The Valley Town for a reason — it’s nestled at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment and surrounded by vast forests and sparkling frozen waterfalls in the winter.
You’ll want to get out and stretch your legs on one of the many hikes and lookout points in the region, before making your way into the quaint town for some boutique shopping and a bite to eat.
Where: King St W, Dundas
What better place to spend a winter weekend than in Ontario’s “most beautiful village?” When it comes to scenic views and historic charm, especially in the winter, Elora does not disappoint.
You’ll want to take a peek inside of the adorable boutiques that line the streets of this quaint destination and if you’re in the mood to spoil yourself, you can visit the iconic Elora Mill & Spa for some relaxation.
This small town in Ontario was named the “prettiest” in Canada by none other than the late Queen Elizabeth II, so you know you’re in for something special.
Goderich, Ontario is a small coastal town situated on bluffs with a gorgeous view of Lake Huron. The town is known for its almost turquoise-blue beaches (three in fact) and a very charming historic downtown.
In the winter, it offers some incredible views! This is the perfect day trip destination.
As for its Hallmark background, according to Ottawa Tourism, Pakenham’s famous Cedar Hill Christmas Tree Farm is a lively holiday spot and has been featured in several holiday movies.
Often called one of the “prettiest towns in Ontario,” this spot is more of a hike from the Toronto area than the ones previously mentioned, but it’s totally worth the drive.
The blend of historic 19th-century architecture and the serene parks and waterways give Perth a postcard-like atmosphere — the town has worked hard to preserve its heritage feel over the years.
If you want to go on a scenic day trip and knock out some errands while you’re at it, then you have to hit up the adorable Village of St. Jacobs, located in the Township of Woolwich.
Steeped in rich Mennonite heritage, St. Jacobs is home to the largest population of Old Order Mennonites in Canada, according to the St. Jacobs Market.
You don’t have to travel far outside of Toronto to find a small town, rich in heritage and charm. You don’t even have to leave the GTA! Unionville is an incredible spot to spend an afternoon and it’s absolutely wonderful
Its heritage buildings and main street will make you feel like you’re on the set of a Hallmark holiday movie. The town is so picturesque that Gilmore Girls filmed its pilot here, and winters just make it so much more charming.
