A Shakespearean garden party with live theatre is coming to Calgary this month

The Bard in the Yard Garden Party is taking over a private residence in Calgary’s Ramsay neighbourhood for an evening of live theatre, food, and drinks, all accompanied by some pretty amazing views of the city skyline. Throughout the night, actors will pop up around the property, performing scenes from Bottom’s Dream, which is a playful adaptation inspired by William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

So, if you’re wondering what the evening will actually look like, here’s the rundown.

What to expect at the Bard in the Yard Garden Party

If you’re not familiar with Bottom’s Dream, no need to panic. The production is an adaptation inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, one of his best-known comedies. It puts Bottom, a prominent character from the play, at the centre of the story.

Rather than watching the production from one spot like a typical theatre play, you’ll encounter scenes throughout the evening as you make your way across the property.

And of course we can’t forget about the actual garden party. Prepare to dress up in your most elegant outfit and lean into the Garden Party Chic dress code.

You also won’t be left standing around with an empty stomach. Appetizers and grazing stations will be available along with specialty cocktails served throughout the night.

The event is put on by The Shakespeare Company, a Calgary theatre company that has been bringing live theatre to the city since 1995. According to organizers, the company is all about making classical theatre feel more accessible, engaging and fun.

Tickets, timing, and details

The Bard in the Yard Garden Party will take place on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 6 to 10 p.m. at a private residence in Calgary’s Ramsay neighbourhood.

Tickets are $100 per person and must be purchased online ahead of the event. Your ticket includes live performances, hors d’oeuvres, grazing stations, a specialty cocktail, and two drink tickets. There will also be a cash bar available if you want to keep the drinks coming!

Only 80 tickets are available for this event, so if this sounds like something you’d want to attend, you’ll want to grab your tickets quickly before they’re gone.

So whether you know every Shakespeare quote by heart or couldn’t name a single one, there’s a good chance you’ll find something to enjoy here.
