There’s a trail in Ontario that holds millions of years of geological history

Who’s up for an autumn adventure? While some of us may be gearing up to get into the holiday spirit, the weather is still mild and that means getting outside while you still can. Rushing River Provincial Park is the perfect place to do so, a park that holds millions of years of geological history along its beautiful trails.

Getting there

Rushing River Provincial Park is one of the handful of Ontario Parks that are open into the autumn and winter for day use.

The park is located in Kenora, Ontario so if you don’t already live in the northern part of the province, it’ll be a bit of a trip (but well worth it).

There is a day fee for visiting the park starting at $12.25 per vehicle.

Exploring the park

One thing you’ll need to bring is your hiking shoes!

The trails are one of the main attractions at Rushing River Provincial Park, including the Granite Knoll Trail. This hike takes you along the shoreline of Dogtooth Lake, over millions of years of geological history and back through the pine forest.

Be sure to take your time when navigating this trail to really take in all the geological sights along the way.

Lower Rapids Trail is another must-see, a scenic loop trail that follows an old portage around the rapids and waterfalls!

If you’re going during the winter months when snow is on the ground, you’re in for some fun. Rushing River features 18 kilometres of groomed skate and cross-country ski trails for adventurers at all levels. Snowshoeing is welcome on the trails as well.

The park provides a map of all the ski trails so you can plan out your day ahead of time.
