A historic five-arch bridge in Ontario is one of its kind in North America

Ontario is packed with history, and the Pakenham Historic Five Span Bridge stands out as one of its most unique landmarks. It’s the only one of its kind in North America. Here’s what you need to know.

In order to experience the beauty of the historic bridge, you must travel to the Municipality of Mississippi Mills.

The bridge stands in the town of Pakenham. It’s about a four-hour drive away from Toronto and less than an hour away from Ottawa.

The story behind the bridge

According to the municipality, the “5 Span Bridge was originally built in 1903 by Scottish Stone Masons (O’Toole & Keating of Ottawa) over the Mississippi River and rapids in Pakenham, and it was created with stones that came from a local quarry.”

And as we’ve mentioned, it is one of its kind in North America. It is “believed to be the only one of its kind in the world outside of Russia.”

Around the time it was first built, it was mostly used for horses and carriages. However, as cars became more common, the bridge’s stability was compromised.

It wasn’t until a few years later that the bridge was restored in 1984.

“The stones were carefully removed and identified before being reinstated into their original position over the reinforced concrete structure used to strengthen the bridge for modern-day use,” they state.

The Municipality of Mississippi Mills consists of the former Townships of Ramsay and Pakenham and the Town of Almonte, which amalgamated in January 1998.

While you’re here, explore the town’s antiques, museums, and theatres. This is the perfect adventure after you’re done with your bridge experience. Head on over to the local gems and explore what this area has to offer.

Now, what are you waiting for? Plan a day and hit the road. This historic adventure awaits.
