The Calgary Group Chat: What your friends are talking about this week (Oct. 6)

Welcome to the Calgary Group Chat. We’re here to fill you in on what people around the city have been chatting about this week, whether it’s the weather, what’s changing around the city, or what’s coming next. Plus, there’s also a familiar pop star coming to town and some Grey Cup news to catch you up on.

So grab a coffee, and let’s get into it!

What’s new, Calgary?

Carly Rae Jepsen is making her way to Calgary next year

Cary Rae Jepsen is coming to Calgary next spring, so it’s time to revisit all those old pop favourites. She’ll be bringing her Day and Night tour to the Grey Eagle Event Centre on April 16, 2027.

General tickets go on sale on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 10 a.m., so mark your calendar if you want to be there.

We might be getting our first taste of winter this weekend

As much as it pains us to say, Calgary temperatures are expected to take a dip this weekend, and some flurries are on the way.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, temperatures could drop from 20°C on Friday to 5°C on Saturday, with a 60 per cent chance of showers and temperatures falling to around -3°C overnight. Sunday is looking just as chilly, with a high of 5°C and a chance of flurries.

Calgary just changed what you can recycle

The City of Calgary just changed what you can toss in the blue bin. According to the City of Calgary, you can now recycle more types of packaging, including chip bags, toothpaste tubes, foam takeout containers, and empty aerosol cans.

The changes are now officially in effect, so it might be a good time to take another look at what you’ve been throwing in the garbage and make the swap.

A football pop-up experience is taking over CF Market Mall

If you haven’t heard, Calgary is hosting the Grey Cup this year, and the festivities are already popping up around the city ahead of the big event. One of the latest is The Huddle at CF Market Mall, a football-themed pop-up where you can test your skills with interactive games and activities.

According to CF Market Mall, the experience includes a digital football simulator, a blocking sled, a vertical jump test, and other football challenges. There will also be opportunities to meet CFL players and mascots throughout the pop-up. The Huddle is free to check out and will be open until Oct. 18, 2026.

There’s a new hotel coming to East Village

A new hotel is set to be built in East Village, and you may recognize the name behind it. According to Truman Development, Calgary’s first Moxy is planned for the corner of Confluence Way SE and 6th Street SE. The six-storey property will include a lobby bar and lounge, restaurant and patio, and a fitness facility.

Moxy might already sound familiar if you’ve stayed at or heard of the one in Banff, and now the brand is adding a Calgary location. The new property will also be situated close to the Bow River pathways and all the amenities around East Village.

That’s all from us this week. We’ll be back next Tuesday with more things happening around the city, so you’ll know where to find us for your next Calgary update.

Chat next week.
