Netflix US unveils new cheaper subscription service but there’s a catch

How many streaming services do you have these days? Probably a few, meaning the cost adds up. If you’re a fan of Netflix you’ll be happy to know that the popular streaming platform is changing up the game. They are now launching a cheaper subscription option starting next month but there’s a catch.

Netflix is introducing “Basic with Ads” this November, it’s the streaming platform’s new lower-priced ad-supported plan. The new subscription will cost Americans $6.99 a month.

So what’s the catch? Though you’ll still be able to watch a variety of TV shows and movies, the video quality will be less.

Basically, the difference is this, you can expect video quality up to 720p/HD and an average of four to five minutes of ads per hour. What’s more a limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available “due to licensing restrictions” which according to Netflix, “we’re working on.”

“We’re confident that with Netflix starting at $6.99 a month, we now have a price and plan for every fan. While it’s still very early days, we’re pleased with the interest from both consumers and the advertising community — and couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead. As we learn from and improve the experience, we expect to launch in more countries over time” said the streaming platform in its announcement.

Basic with Ads will be available in 12 countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK, and the US.

You can sign up for the service just like any of its other offerings, starting November 1.
