Toronto’s King Street is transforming into a pedestrian-only zone

Your summer nights are about to change… at least on one of Toronto’s busiest streets. The City of Toronto will be transforming a portion of King St into a pedestrian-only zone starting this July and here’s what you need to know.

In a bid to boost nightlife safety, the City has announced the launch of the King St Pedestrian Pilot project, slated to start July 4th, 2024.

After conducting a review of the space and looking to create strategies that promote safe and enjoyable communities for all, it looks like Toronto will be rolling out a new pedestrian-only plan.

That means that a stretch of King St from Spadina Avenue to Portland St will only be allowed to pedestrians on select nights.

As per documents soon to be released, the city is looking to implement this as early as this summer – when it plans to reintroduce drinking in parks like last year.

The pilot will begin Thursdays to Sundays, “eliminating vehicular traffic to create a safer and more enjoyable environment for club-goers and entertainment enthusiasts.”

As for how it will work, vehicular access will be restricted from Thursday to Sunday evenings, starting at 4 PM and concluding at 7 AM the next day.

The King St Pedestrian pilot will run until September 30th at 7 AM.

The true test will come during TIFF festivities as other portions of King St will also close off for short periods from September 5th to the 15th.

If city residents respond positively, changes could be made to the Ossington strip and a portion of Queen St in 2025.

According to the city, it continues to enhance Toronto’s Night Economy by exploring “new ways to activate space and enhance livability for everyone who works at night or is interested in cultural or social experiences after dark.”

But for now, let’s see how this pilot runs.
