Did you know? Alberta is home to the ‘World’s Largest Bee’

First and foremost- happy World Bee Day! And to celebrate, we’re reminding you that Alberta is home to the World’s Largest Bee. That’s right folks, a big ol’ bee is tucked away in a town that most people don’t even know exists.

But boy, is it a fitting spot for this bee to be. Falher is a small town north of Edmonton in the Smoky River Region. And while the population is floating right around 1,000 people, the relatively high level of honey output has led to it being dubbed the “Honey Capital of Canada”. What a sweet moniker!

So, it’s only fair that Falher is also home to the World’s Largest Bee. Originally created for the town’s annual honey festival, the bee was built by a local artist and welder back in 1990. Not only is the statue some 7 metres long and 2 metres wide, but it’s also perched roughly 6 metres above the ground! Let’s just say you need to see it to bee-lieve it, hehe.

Of course, the World’s Largest Bee is just one of a handful of unique roadside attractions in Alberta, from comically large dinosaurs to giant sausages. If you’re hoping to see some more for yourself, then make sure to check out our guide to the best ones in the province.

And once again, happy World Bee Day!
