Social media’s favourite pizza critic may no longer be in town, but this isn’t the end of Dave Portnoy’s Toronto pizza reviews. The Barstool president posted his sixth review on Monday, where he paid a visit to one of the city’s most established family-owned spots, Pizza Gigi.

This little pizzeria made quite the impression on Portnoy, not because of its pie but because of its people.

He was especially fond of Pizza Gigi’s former slogan and kept repeating it throughout the video — “I had them all from Fairbanks to Fiji, but nothing compares to that sweet taste of Pizza Gigi.”

Right off the bat, the pres told the camera that the pizza shop employees were “bar none, favourite people [he’s] met.”

“I love the people and the stories behind it as much as the pizza,” he said. “If you’re buying and supporting good local businesses, Pizza Gigi is already a 10.”

As for the pie itself, Portnoy admitted that from the look of it, he suspected that it wouldn’t be his style. Taking a bite, he noted that it was “pretty greasy on top” and could’ve been a “very distant cousin” to New Haven-style pizza.

In the end, he gave Pizza Gigi an overall score of 7.0 and said that he was including the people in his rating.

That puts Pizza Gigi in fourth place. North of Brooklyn Pizzeria scored the highest at 8.4, followed by Bitondo’s in second place at 7.5 and The Fourth Man in the Fire a close third with a score of 7.4.
Then comes Pizza Gigi with 7.0, trailed by Blondie’s Pizza with a score of 6.8, and Maker Pizza dead last at 6.1.
Portnoy did promise to review 15 pizzas during his time in Toronto and provide a definitive ranking of the city’s pies, so here’s to hoping he delivers!
