This was the coldest day of the year in Seattle in 2021 & it broke records

Washington has had quite the winter! From snow to floods and fog, it feels like we’ve seen it all (hopefully we have). That being said, February is known to have a few weather wildcards. So let’s get prepared by taking a look at Seattle’s coldest day of the year.

Before you get nervous about ice age 2.0 in February, the coldest day of the year has passed, and by well over a month. The coldest day of the year is December 23rd according to NOAA‘s averaged 1991-2020 U.S. Climate Normals.

But this year was unsurprisingly a bit different, Washington recorded its coldest day of the year on December 27th. By the way, this was actually the coldest day in 31 years at a balmy 23 degrees Fahrenheit. So we broke our average record and also a temperature record, go us!

Despite our slightly later coldest day of the year in 2021, we’re still following general weather trends and predictions. According to NOAA “the coldest day of the year usually occurs in December” in the west. Whereas in the east, “the coldest day of the year is typically later in the season thanks to cold air from snow-covered parts of Canada dipping down into the area.”

So let’s hope Punxsutawney Phil has good news on February 2nd. After all, we could all use some more sun and some of Seattle’s beautiful spring weather. Have a great week, Seattle!
