Big news, hockey fans! With some new digs and a whole lot of spunk, Calgary’s AHL team has officially unveiled its new name and it might look a little familiar to many of you.

“YAHOO!” they wrote on Twitter as part of their big announcement. “The Calgary Wranglers have arrived in #yyc!”

Set to play in the iconic Scotiabank Saddledome, the NHL counterpart (previously known as the Stockton Heat from California) will flaunt an ignited ‘W’ not unlike the beloved crest the Flames wear on their jerseys – an homage to both the past and present of Calgary hockey.

“The Wranglers become the second team to don the name in Calgary following the Calgary Wranglers of the Western Canadian Junior Hockey League (WCHL) who came to Calgary in 1977,” the NHL wrote in a statement.

“The return of the Calgary Wranglers, this time as the Flames American Hockey League affiliate brings a fresh, new look to the original Wranglers logo that had a significant era in Calgary hockey history.”

If you can’t contain your excitement – rest assured that merch will be on its way shortly after their home and away uniforms – as well as a secondary logo design – is unveiled in the coming weeks.
