From city centres to outer bounds, cast and crew of HBO’s upcoming series The Last Of Us have taken over and completely transformed some of Alberta’s most recognizable streets, parks and government buildings. This time around, as many Calgary students are already aware, it’s apocalypse week at both the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology as well as Mount Royal University and the photos are insane.

With a sky-high budget (maybe the largest for any TV show in history) the folks behind TLOU, which is a live-action adaption of a best-selling video game, have built some incredibly elaborate backdrops since they began filming in the area last July.

Set in America after a mutating fungus wipes out most of humanity, the show follows a smuggler tasked with escorting a young girl back to safety and stars Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, Narcos)  and Bella Ramsey (Game Of Thrones).

As you can imagine, Albertans have seen everything from dust and debris, to explosions, plane crashes and abandoned vehicles with each location just as impressive as the last and these were no exception.

Following this week’s snow fall, Twitter account @HBOsTheLastofUs reported that HBO has actually melted the snow outside of SAIT’s Heritage Hall building so it would look as if it were still autumn – which is insane.

They’ve also added several signs, leaves, vines and trees all throughout the inside of the MRU campus – which you can see below.

Honestly, we don’t think we’ll ever get sick of seeing it – and can’t wait for what’s to come as they continue making magic.

Luckily, for our eyes, we’ll have plenty more time to oggle and admire the work they’ve been doing because they’ll be kicking around the province until June 2022, so keep your eyes peeled!
