In a desperate bid to attract new staff, Starbucks Canada is hiking wages and upping perks to support their employees’ wellbeing. The chain is facing “critical staffing shortages” and they hope their initiatives will inspire new recruits to come on board, reports The Canadian Press.
“We have been through some of the toughest times our world has ever seen and although we are still living through this immense change, we are moving forward thoughtfully and courageously to always be a company that cares for its people,” said Starbucks Canada’s senior VP and general manager to the outlet.
Not only will Starbucks employees be making a dollar more per hour than their province’s minimum wage, being with the company for one year will also get you a 6 to 10-cent raise. These wage boosts will go into effect in January and will impact roughly 20,000 employees, the outlet says.

This will allow baristas to make anywhere from $13 and $20.45, depending on their location and how long they’ve been with the company. The outlet says that shift supervisors will also get a nice boost, with potential earnings of $15.85 to $24.95 an hour.
The company is also giving employees access to more training and new technology to help them accomplish their tasks more efficiently.
As for perks, Starbucks gives its Canadian staff access to a meditation app, free health, and dental care, as well as 3 paid shifts off per calendar year, reports The Canadian Press.
Other major chains are also staying competitive to keep their talent. Chipotle recently gave its employees in Ontario and BC a wage bump, along with recruiting bonuses of up to $750.
