A while back, some of Italy’s lesser-known communities set the internet on fire with their ‘1 Euro House’ campaigns, offerings adventurous folks the opportunity to buy a home for less than $1.50 CAD. Now, Airbnb has joined the party, and is giving one lucky person the chance to live in Italy for an entire year, rent-free, in their very own 1 Euro House.

One of the first communities to jump on the ‘1 Euro House’ wave was Sambuca, located in the region of Sicily on the south side of the country.
The plan was pretty simple- offer up houses for an insanely low price (auctions starting at 1 Euro), but on the condition that the buyer would renovate and fix the home within three years. The vast majority of the properties were damaged significantly, so it was a win-win situation.

That was almost two years ago now (boy, does time fly!) and Airbnb has had enough time to work its magic.
Not only do they have a heritage home lined up, but they’ve also already given it a complete makeover alongside the Italian architecture firm Studio Didea. Spanning three floors with multiple bedrooms, the home blends contemporary design elements with heritage charm and functionality- basically, everything you need to live your best life.

Not only will the selected applicant be allowed to bring those close to them (2 adults and 2 children max) for their trip, but they can also take part in a mentorship program (cooking and language classes) while there. Of course, there’s also the expectation that they’ll contribute to village life, so being friendly is definitely part of the deal here.

In fact, it’s practically required. That’s because one requirement is that the selected person will need to host Airbnb guests in one (or more) of the rooms for at least 9 months out of the year, and actually live in the home for at least 3 months. But, on the flipside, they’ll be entitled to all the earnings that come from that, which means extra cash in your pocket for those impromptu road trips or weekend getaways around the rest of the country.

Applications to live in this beautifully renovated ‘1 Euro House’, courtesy of Airbnb, are now open! Heads up- you’ll need to be able to move there at the end of June, so get your application in if you’re interested!
