If you clicked on this article because you thought it couldn’t possibly be right, you’re in for a surprise. Yes, the United States is only 243 years old and yes Washington has only been a state since 1889. But Washington does indeed have a 500-year-old castle. And it’s called Thornewood Castle, don’t worry if you haven’t heard of it.
Tacoma’s 500-year-old castle
In 1907 a man by the name of Chester Thorne bought a 400-year-old Elizabethan manor in England. And as you might have guessed, he had it dismantled and shipped over to Tacoma. This is where he created the Tudor Gothic home that exists today. And that means items like the front door, oak paneling, and oak staircase all came from inside the castle. Plus the home is also filled with over 100 pieces of stained glass. All of which were salvaged from 15th & 16th-century churches.

With details like that you’re probably wondering just how you can check out this special place. And the answer is that Thornewood Castle now offers overnight rooms, vacation rentals, and a venue for special events. So if you’re planning a wedding and feeling inspired by Bridgerton, you might just want to book this castle as your venue. Because this is a truly unforgettable spot.
And before we forget to mention, the grounds were also designed by the Olmstead Brothers. If the name sounds familiar, they’re the same guys who did Central Park and also several local parks including Volunteer Park. So not only is the inside of this castle beautiful but the outside is too. And we have to say it’s definitely worth learning more about if you’re into this sort of thing.
