Canada has a lot of great things going for it, including its post-secondary schools. Four Canadian schools have made it into the top 100 list of the World University Rankings for 2023.

The 2023 ranking by the Times Higher Education is the largest and most diverse to date, featuring nearly 1,800 schools across 104 countries.

The schools are evaluated using 13 “carefully calibrated performance indicators” in four distinct categories: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

Over 15 million research publications were analyzed for this year’s ranking and it’s said to be trusted worldwide by students, teachers, governments, and industry experts.

The highest-ranking Canadian school is, of course, the University of Toronto in 18th place. U of T scored major points for its diversity and global reach, and for being at the forefront of innovation for over a century.

Next up is the University of British Columbia, which placed 40th in the 2023 ranking, followed by McGill University in 46th place.

Another Ontario university snuck into the top 100 — McMaster University in Hamilton, landing in 85th place.

Further down the list is the University of Montreal in 111th place and the University of Alberta in 118th.

Canadian publisher Maclean’s also releases an annual ranking of the best universities in the country.

In the 2023 edition, the University of Toronto also came in 1st place, followed by the University of Waterloo, UBC, McGill, and McMaster.

There’s no question that U of T is Canada’s best university, coming in at the top of practically every ranking year after year. But, it seems like other schools are finally starting to catch up!
