BC is home to the best small city in the world

Call us biased, but we think British Columbia is home to some of the most beautiful small towns around, and it looks like we’re not the only ones who think so. Named the best small city in the world by Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards is none other than Victoria, our provincial capital!

Recognized for its many wellness experiences, diverse wildlife, and fascinating history, Victoria is a natural pick for the title, if you ask us.

According to CNT, visitors from Vancouver can arrive via “one of the most scenic ferry rides in the world” at Swartz Bay, and take advantage of a number of popular day excursions. Whether you want to explore some of the most famous gardens in the country, hit up a sandy beach, or uncover some local history (and bites) from Canada’s oldest Chinatown – there is no shortage of options here.

Victoria was also recognized as one of the “most British towns in Canada,” with plenty of high tea programs to tempt those with a sweet tooth – including at the famed Fairmont Empress.

Here are the world’s best small cities in 2024, according to CNT:

  1. Victoria, Canada
  2. San Sebastián, Spain
  3. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
  4. Florence, Italy
  5. Salzburg, Austria
  6. Lucerne, Switzerland
  7. Porto, Portugal
  8. Galway, Ireland
  9. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
  10. Dubrovnik, Croatia

So while we’ll always be on the lookout for lesser-known hidden gems throughout the province, don’t rule out Victoria for an unforgettable fall experience!

How to get there: Take an hour and 35-minute ferry from Vancouver at Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, Victoria.
