These deep blue lakes in BC are lined with dramatic cliffs and fall colours

Who says lake days are over simply because we’ve shifted from summer to fall?! British Columbia is home to many adorable lake towns worth visiting this time of year, but Silver Springs near Fernie should definitely be on your map of fall foliage to see.

A series of three spring-fed lakes with deep blue waters, Silver Springs is straight out of a storybook. Clear waters, dramatic cliffs, and vibrant autumn colours lining each lake. What more could you ask for in a fall destination?

Those who embark on a short day hike can see all three, starting with the first lake – a popular spot for swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddling.

An iconic cliff jumping spot, you’re better off at the second or third lakes if you’re after a quieter escape to nature. Follow the lake trail to access the latter two lakes, which double as prime fishing spots.

Here, visitors can find rainbow trout weighing up to three pounds!

When it comes to fall colours, you’re guaranteed a front-row seat to some of the best autumn views around. According to Tourism Fernie, the Elk Valley is covered in a blanket of golden larches this time of year.

Want to extend your visit? Silver Springs is connected to the Wigwam Flats Trail, which meanders through the scenic Elk Canyon to the Elk River confluence.

So there you have it, lake lovers! Remember to pack out what you pack in, and leave no trace behind.

Happy exploring!

Silver Springs

How to get there: Drive south along Highway 3 from Fernie towards Elko, passing through the Elko Tunnel. Turn left immediately after the train bridge (towards the Elko Sawmill) and travel down the main road in Elko. Take the first gravel road on the left (River Road) after passing the last house. There will be parking available between the 5th and 6th-kilometre marker.
