One of Toronto’s largest development projects going on right now has got to be the major makeover happening at the waterfront. If you haven’t heard about the Toronto Port Lands Flood Protection Project yet, your mind is about to be blown.

The city is spending a whopping $1.25 billion dollars on revamping the area. Yes, billion with a “B.” Part of the project is a brand new river connecting the Don River to Lake Ontario.

The Toronto Port Lands Flood Protection Project as a whole serves many functions. Most notably, the creation of flood protection infrastructure (as its name suggests). The new mouth to the Don River will also feature new bridges, parks, and city roads.

As for the river running directly through it? That’ll be a sight for sore eyes. According to the Port Lands Project Plan, the new river channel will span more than 1,000 metres. The area will include 30 hectares of naturalized green space and 11 hectares of parkland.

Of course, functionality is key. Which is why the space is being created as a wetland structure, to contain flooding if and when it does occur.

It’s all still under construction now, but the project is forecasted to be complete by 2024.

Overall, this area of the city is going to be a pretty insane one when everything is said and done. If you’d like to learn more, you can check out the full project document right here.
