It’s no secret that Toronto is a prime location for movie and TV shoots. Productions from all over the place regularly come to our city to take advantage of our stellar studio space, awesome Canadian crews, and, well, a pretty sweet tax break they get from shooting in Canada. But when the virus hit back in March, loads of our favourite Toronto-shot shows and movies had to halt production. For some, this meant cancelling production altogether. For others, it just meant going on an indefinite break. But no matter what the case was, we had to say goodbye to loads of new Toronto born content that should have been filmed earlier this year.
Here are 5 movies and shows that WOULD have filmed in Toronto in 2020.
THE HANDMAID’S TALE SEASON 4
This Emmy award-winning series has shot in Toronto since its very first season. When you watch earlier episodes, you can spot some of your favourite city locations like the St. Lawrence Market, Nathan Phillips Square, and even the CN Tower every so often. But thanks to COVID-19, season four was forced to halt shooting in March of this year. If you’re a fan of the series though, don’t worry. Rumour has it that shooting is set to resume very soon.
NIGHTMARE ALLEY
The latest movie from Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro began their star-studded shoot in September of last year. They were set to wrap in July 2020, but a wrench was thrown in those plans when the virus arrived. Shooting for the feature is still currently on hold and we’re not sure when it’s going to return. We’ll be waiting eagerly though, as this movie stars Cate Blanchett, Bradley Cooper, and Toni Collette. So we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for some star sightings once it’s back.

SEE SEASON 2
The first season of this Jason Momoa drama was a huge hit. So we were definitely pumped for its return to Toronto to shoot season two. Although production was able to begin back in February, before this whole mess of a pandemic hit, it had to put everything on pause due to the virus. Good news though, filming is set to start back up in September of this year. So we won’t have to wait too long to see Jason Momoa’s flowing hair on our screens once again.
FLINT STRONG
Written by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), this movie follows the story of a boxer from Flint, Michigan, who eventually became the first woman in America’s history to win an Olympic gold medal in her sport. It was set to begin shooting in Toronto this March, but needless to say, that did not happen. Production is currently still on hold and we’ll just have to wait and see what the future brings for this flick.
BIG BROTHER CANADA SEASON 8
Viewers watched in awe as the houseguests of Big Brother Canada Season 8 were told of COVID-19 resulting in their production’s closure. After everyone on the show had been sequestered from the outside world while the pandemic took over, them learning the news certainly made for a dramatic final episode. Since the reality show had no winner they opted to donate the prize money from that season to COVID-19 relief funds. But don’t worry, the end of season eight did not mean the end of BBCAN. In fact, the reality series is casting season nine right now! You can head online here if you’d like to learn more.
So there you have it. Things still seem to be pretty up in the air in terms of TV and movie shoots in the city. But it does look like things are getting back on track for the most part! We can’t wait for the day where all these crazy production closures are a thing of the past and Canada’s film and television industry is back on its feet. Until then, stay healthy friends.
