After years of swirling rumours, the team behind Toronto’s blossoming Mirvish Village development is finally pulling back the curtain on its mystifying food hall concept, The Kitchen, which will soon open there.
Already home to an impressive selection of food vendors, with more on the way, Mirvish Village is quickly shaping up to be a true foodie destination. And that’s all before the development has said virtually anything about the sizeable multi-kitchen dining concept it’s planning to open up.
As the Badialis and Book Bars of the world have set up shop along Markham Street, the question marks surrounding the food hall have loomed large: Who will the vendors be? When will it open? How big will it be?
While we don’t have all the answers just yet, we finally have some, and they’re every bit as juicy as one would hope.
The Kitchen, created in collaboration with Kitchen Hub, which operates a number of multi-kitchen concepts in Toronto, will occupy a whopping 9,000 sq. ft. split across two levels, with kitchen space for 12 curated vendors to operate.
In total, the space will offer indoor seating for 450, with nearly 100 added seasonally for outdoor dining, along with a mezzanine complete with a full bar.
Here’s where things get really cool, though. Rather than the traditional food hall concept, where you’d have to bop around from kiosk to kiosk to get food from different vendors, at The Kitchen, everything will be centralized.
Customers will order from a single kiosk, including dishes from as many kitchens as they’d like in a single order, before the entire order is delivered via conveyor belt and deposited into a pickup cubby. It’s all a bit dystopian, but also deeply intriguing.
“The Kitchen was designed around a moment every group knows well: no one can agree on where to eat,” said director of food and beverage operations, Grant Nelson.
“Here, everyone orders from a different kitchen and sits down at the same table. We want The Kitchen to feel like the neighbourhood’s kitchen table, a place where you can drop in for a bite, share different items and try new things, and end up staying a lot longer than you planned.”
And if the whole conveyor-belt-to-cubby pipeline feels a bit impersonal for your taste, have no fear: The Kitchen is outfitted and intended to be a space for connection. A pull-down projector and premium sound system will make it an ideal destination for watch parties and community gatherings of all shapes and sizes.
As for what food you’ll be able to eat in this kitchen, that much is under wraps for now, but with an opening slated for early 2027, you won’t have to wait much longer to get a taste.
