A Toronto brewery is being sued by The Tragically Hip over the name of one of its beers

It turns out The Tragically Hip are, tragically, not so hip with one Toronto bar at the moment. The Canadian rock band is suing Mill St Brewery over the name of one of their beers. If you’ve ever sipped on the “100th Meridian” Organic Amber Lager, then you’ve sipped on quite the controversial brew.

So in case you’re unfamiliar with The Tragically Hip, we’ll give you a brief rundown. The rock band is Canadian; based in Kingston, Ontario. They are one of the most celebrated Canadian bands of all time, and their farewell tour with their late frontman Gord Downie culminated in a final show in August of 2016 watched by over 11 million Canadians.

On their 1992 album Fully Completely, you’ll find the hit single At The Hundredth Meridian. Does that name sound familiar?

So the actual lawsuit is for an alleged trademark infringement. The Tragically Hip claims that Mill St. Brewery tried to capitalize on the band’s fame by implying association with them.

There’s a social media post cited within the suit in which Mill St Brewery wrote that their 100th Meridian was “an appropriate beer to celebrate The Tragically Hip playing Yonge and Dundas Square.” They also made a post announcing the bar would be broadcasting one of the band’s concerts.

Apparently, The Tragically Hip tried to settle this outside of court with Mill St Brewery, but to no avail. “They didn’t take us seriously and were frankly disrespectful,” the band said in a statement. Oof.

If you’d like to see the public’s reaction to the whole thing, just take a little scroll through the comments on Mill St Brewery’s Instagram posts. It’s fair to say many fans of The Tragically Hip are not very impressed.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
