This Toronto restaurant is the only one in Canada to rank in the world’s top 100

Toronto’s dining scene is getting the recognition it deserves. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants has released an extended version of its ranking, which names the top 51-100 culinary hotspots around the globe. The list spans 22 countries and 6 continents.

The restaurants are picked by an elite voting panel “comprising over 1,000 independent authorities in the world of gastronomy, from renowned international chefs and food journalists to travelling gastronomes,” the description says.

On the entire list of 100 restaurants, only one in Canada earned itself a spot, but just barely, landing in 98th place.

The panel selected Alo, a contemporary French restaurant at the top of a heritage building on Spadina Ave just south of Queen St W, as the only Canadian spot to earn a place on this year’s ranking.

Alo’s dining room serves “blind, multi-course tasting menus” for tables of 2 to 4 guests and at $185 per person — evidently, the price is worth it. The restaurant’s Barroom serves an à la carte food menu and classically-inspired cocktails.

Alo may be the only Toronto restaurant to receive a nod on this ranking, but there are several others that prove this province is full of incredible culinary destinations worth trying.

Over 25 spots in the GTA were ranked Canada’s best places to eat in 2021, and several others were ranked “the best of the best” in the country by tourists.
