Dogs are social creatures, but just like humans, not all of them are compatible. If your pup struggles to fit in with the dog park crowd, or simply can’t get enough playdates with new friends, you can find them new buddies in your neighbourhood from the comfort of your couch.

The free app, called Pawmates, is similar to dating apps like Tinder and Bumble. You can set up a profile for your dog and for yourself, then swipe left and right through potential matches in your area. If you both swipe right, you’ll have the chance to chat and arrange your first meetup.

The app was voted Canada’s best dog app in 2020, according to its Instagram. Pawmates told Curiocity that it’s available worldwide, but most users are based in Ontario, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Regina, and Vancouver, among others.

The creator of Pawmates, a 27-year-old in Toronto named Colin Jarvis-Gaum, came up with the idea as a way to find new friends for his aging golden retriever, who struggled to keep up with the dogs at the park, he told CTV Toronto.

Not only can you find lifelong friendships for your pup, but also some new buddies of your own while you’re at it. Seeing your dogs become instant friends will definitely help break the ice, which is probably why Toronto’s recent dog-friendly singles mixer sold out so quickly.

Toronto is full of fun things to do with your furry friend. A fall festival for dogs and a doggy costume party are both happening in the city this weekend. Both of which would be the perfect first date idea for you and your new Pawmate.
