Just when you think you’d done all the major PNW hikes, here we are reminding you of the most elusive one. If you haven’t already guessed by the title were talking about the Enchantments. Never heard of them? They’re located in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness of the Cascade Mountains right here in Washington.
Just a quick look at a few photos of the Enchantments and you’ll be ready to hike them. But there’s a catch, a really big catch. This area is only accessible through a permit lottery and that permit can take literally years to get. While that might seem crazy, it’s for a good reason. The lottery is in place to protect this stunning wilderness.

But don’t lose hope because there is actually a way that you can visit this beautiful area. You can still visit for a day trip which is absolutely worth it if you ask us. But keep in mind because this area is so popular and a coveted hike, you probably won’t find much solitude on a day trip. So if you can be patient we really recommend applying for the overnight permit lottery.
Unfortunately for this season, the lottery application window has already passed. But as we mentioned, you can still enjoy a day trip and see if you’d like to eventually apply for the permit lottery.
