Welcome to another hot-as-heck week of August, Vancouver. To keep things cool, we’ve got a mix of evening music events and the tail-end of outdoor movie season. So with that in mind, here are 10 of the best things to do in and around Vancouver this week (August 14-18).

From August 14th to 16th and 21st to 23rd, Music on Main is slated to make its return to Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant Park. So why not bring your picnic blankets and spend some quality summer evenings surrounded by friends and live music?

Vegan Night Market

With several summer markets already under its belt (including the city’s first beachside night market), the Vegan Night Market by Peaces.ca is back and better than ever. Currently, the organizers are gearing up for their last summer market at The Waldorf on Thursday, August 17th – so don’t miss out on delicious, local plant-based eats and drinks!

Note that the final summer market on August 31st will take place at Locarno Beach.

Encanto at Sunset Cinema

On Wednesday, August 16th, you can catch an outdoor viewing of Disney’s beloved Encanto, which marks Sunset Cinema’s second-to-last outdoor movie of the year – so don’t miss out!

Each screening will take place from 9 to 11 pm at The Shipyards.

Moonstruck at Deckchair Cinema 

Ready for even more outdoor movies? Deckchair Cinema is in full swing on Cates Deck in North Van, and this week, you can catch a viewing of Moonstruck on Thursday, August 17th.

When: August 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, and 31st
Where: Cates Deck, North Vancouver
Cost: Free admission

Everything Everywhere All At Once on the Square

Our last outdoor movie pick (and the series’ last of the year) is Summer Movie Nights at šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square, AKA the north plaza of the Vancouver Art Gallery. This week, the series is capping off with a showing of Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Downtown Van will once again inflate its 16-foor screen and offer visitors the chance to peruse some food trucks onsite as well. Note that activations start at 4 pm and each movie starts around 9 pm, or when the sun sets.

When: Thursday, August 17th

The Irish Fusion Festival

Vancouver’s newest festival is celebrating a fusion of cultures over the course of two days, by way of live music, dance, food, family-friendly entertainment, and more. Tickets are just over $25 for both days, and attendees under the age of 12 can receive free admission!

The fest will take place from 5 to 10 pm on Friday, and from 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday.

When: Friday, August 18th and Saturday, August 19th
Where: 80 Pacific Boulevard
Cost: $27.96 for both days

Canada’s first corn maze is celebrating 25 years in BC with a brand new design, and it’s now officially open to the public at Greendale Acres in Chilliwack. Now open from 10 am to 7 pm from Wednesday to Saturday and until 6 pm on Sundays, regular admission costs $16 in advance and $18 at the door.

Fridays on Front

Finally, we come to Fridays on Front in New West, a community-wide block party taking place every Friday this month. Best of all? Each festival has its own theme, from ‘Bollywood Bash’ to celebrating Pride. Each date will feature a different lineup of food and drink vendors, as well as libations from the fully-licensed Steel & Oak beer + Pacific Breeze Wine.

Each night market will take place from 5 to 9 pm.

When: August 18th and 25th
Where: Front Street Mews, New Westminster

Go on a waterfall hike

It goes without saying that BC is home to some of the most scenic hikes in the country – but there happen to be some particularly striking waterfalls you can check out on many of them!

While Vancouver’s rooftop scene isn’t as bustling as Toronto’s or New York’s – we’ve got a handful of options to toss your way if you’re craving a rooftop patio experience before summer’s end. And with such gorgeous, sunny weather, we doubt you’ll need much convincing.
