Well Edmonton, here we are! The final few weeks of winter, and the official start of spring! Naturally, we’re hoping to make the most of it. And luckily, we’ve got more than a few ways to do just that! Let’s see what’s out there, shall we?

Here are the best things to do around Edmonton this March.

ARTS & CULTURE

FLYING CANOE VOLANT

One of the city’s most well known festivals is back to kick off March! Enjoy some live entertainment, eat delicious food, and of course, make sure to check out the canoe races.

When: March 1st to 5th
Where: 9613 96 Avenue NW
Cost: Varies

SKIRTS ON WHYTE

Here’s another must-see festival. Returning to venues around Whyte Ave, this option combines a variety of art with live events like comedy shows, concerts, and more.

When: March 3rd to 13th
Where: Venues around Edmonton
Cost: Varies

THE CITADEL THEATRE

Live theatre is back in a big way. The Citadel is showing a couple of different options this month, including a world premiere of a take on Jane Eyre.

When: Shows throughout March
Where: 9828 101 A Avenue
Cost: Varies

THE GRINDSTONE THEATRE

For even more variety, this is our recommendation. Comedy shows, small plays, fun satires… the Grindstone has it all, and wants you to come see for yourself.

When: Shows throughout March
Where: 10019 81 Avenue
Cost: Varies

ROYAL ALBERTA MUSEUM

In addition to the permanent collections, you’re running out of time to see Abandoned Alberta- a series of interesting (and a little haunting) photographs documenting the province’s forgotten buildings. That wraps up on March 13th, so get down there!

When: Open throughout March
Where: 9810 103a Avenue NW
Cost: Varies

ART GALLERY OF ALBERTA

On the flipside, the AGA just got two new exhibitions to check out! Byron Samson (Mistikonâpêw) does incredible portraits of Indigenous leaders, while Maud Lewis is recognized as one of the most prominent folk artists in Canadian history.

When: Open throughout March
Where: 2 Sir Winston Churchill Square
Cost: $14

TELUS WORLD OF SCIENCE

There’s always something fun going on at the Telus World of Science, but we’ve got two things in mind here. First, their IMAX theatre is a great way to experience a classic movie, a new blockbuster, or a stunning documentary. Second, the Zeidler Dome has laser shows that are, frankly, out of this world.

When: Open throughout March
Where: 11211 142 Street NW
Cost: $31.45 for GA

OUTDOORS/SPORTS

ALL CANADIAN WINTER

This is our top pick for those wanting to make the most of the end of winter. For the next couple of weeks, the U of A Botanic Garden is hosting a whole bunch of winter-themed activities, from snowshoeing to a cabane a sucre.

When: Weekends until March 13th
Where: 51227 AB-60, Spruce Grove
Tickets: $21 for GA

ELK ISLAND NATIONAL PARK

On another note, Elk Island National Park is a wonderland any time of year. Enjoy some hiking and exploring during the day, then kick back for some stargazing afterwards before you head home.

When: Open throughout March
Where: 54401 Range Road 203, Fort Saskatchewan
Cost: $7.90 for admissions

GO SKATING

Ah yes, the last of the local winter activities. Edmonton has no shortage of great skating options, and of course, our top pick is the Victoria Park IceWay.

When: Open throughout March
Where: All around Edmonton

OR SLEDDING

We feel like sledding opportunities have been few and far between this winter. So, if it does snow, then make sure to head to your local hill for some fast, freezing, fun!

LIVE EVENTS

EDMONTON OILERS

Now past the halfway point of the season, we’re cheering the Oilers on in the hopes that they can secure a playoff spot!

When: Games throughout March
Where: 10220 104 Avenue NW
Cost: Varies

SAID THE WHALE

Said the Whale started out as surf-rock but has dipped its toes into many genres over the years. Coming out of Vancouver, it’s the perfect kind of sound you’ll want to hear ahead of the start of spring.

When: Friday, March 18th
Where: 10030 – 102 Street
Cost: $25+

TOMMY GENESIS

Another Vancouver name, but from a whole different world. Tommy Genesis rose to acclaim in the late 2010s with hard-hitting lyrics and production to match. There’s no doubt that her upcoming concert will energize the crowd in a, let’s say, adult way.

When: Saturday, March 19th
Where: 10030 – 102 Street
Cost: $17+

CLAPTONE

This list wouldn’t be complete without some true EDM. German producer Claptone has made his mark in a few different house genres, which we have to admit, is our favourite way to introduce people who ‘don’t like EDM’ to jumping around in a club for a few hours.

When: Saturday, March 20th
Where: 6240 99 Street NW
Cost: $30+

WINTERRUPTION

And finally, we’re going to throw in this Edmonton winter (now spring) music festival! Showcasing dozens of locals bands, singers, and comedians, this concert kicks off at the end of March and will run for over a week! There are too many good names to count, so just click the link above to see what’s up!

When: Starts Sunday, March 27th
Where: Venues around Edmonton
Cost: Varies

EDMONTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The ESO has got some great variety in store for music lovers this month. You can hear everything from family-friendly options to full-blown symphonies. So, if you’re looking for a high-class night out, this is a great option to keep in mind.

When: Concerts throughout March
Where:  4 Sir Winston Churchill Square
Cost: Varies

FOOD AND DRINK

DOWNTOWN DINING WEEK

One of Edmonton’s best food events returns at the end of this month! Details are scarce at the moment, but we’re expecting that some top-notch spots will be joining the fun.

When: Starts March 30th
Where: Locations around Edmonton

HIT UP THE FARMERS’ MARKETS

We will literally never tire of a weekly or monthly trip to one of Edmonton’s farmers markets. Get some great groceries, maybe treat yourself to a snack… it’s a couple of hours well spent.

When: Open throughout March
Where: Locations around Edmonton

MISCELLANEOUS

HOP IN A GO KART

For those looking for a little more of a thrill this March, you might want to check out Drive! at West Edmonton Mall. As North America’s only 3-level indoor track, this high octane (except electric, so maybe voltage?) option will have you begging for one more race time after time.

When: Open throughout March
Where: 8882 170 Street NW
Cost: $29+

EDMONTON VALLEY ZOO

With the weather hopefully getting nicer, it could be time to head back to the zoo! Watching some animals lay around, play, and just vibe is weirdly therapeutic for us, and it’s fun for all ages.

When: Open throughout March
Where: 13315 Buena Vista Road
Cost: $10.95

MUTTART CONSERVATORY

Last but certainly not least, we’ve got the Muttart Conservatory! This indoor botanical garden is the perfect option for those wanting to speedrun that summer feeling.

When: Open throughout March
Where: 9626 96a Street NW
Tickets: $14.95 for GA

There you have it- our roundup of the best things to do in Edmonton this March! We hope that you enjoy yourselves.
