Summer is here and so is a wicked heatwave. For this reason, we bet that you’re scrambling to find somewhere to take cover and the best place to hide away from the Milky Way’s spiciest boy? Under the water! Grab your swim trunks, your flippy floppies and check out one of these extremely refreshing swimming holes near Calgary. Be safe and stay hydrated, friends!

What’s not to love about Canmore? The trees, the food, the mountains – the swimming holes? Quarry Lake is a gorgeous little spot in Calgary’s neighbouring mountain town with the most beautiful mountain view, just watch for bears. They’re known to show up from time to time.

Taking a walk around Griffith Woods? Bring a swimsuit! Whether you go for the day or just to cool down, this is a great in-city spot on a hotter day. It’s quiet (because it’s practically unknown by those who don’t live in the area), it’s relatively pretty clean and it’s actually gorgeous despite it being within YYC limits. Check it out!

Ah, Johnson Lake. We’re not going to lie, this one is a bit chilly, but we promise you that on a hot day (like the one’s Calgary is about to experience) it’ll be totally worth the dive! Not interested in taking a dip? It’s also a great place to have a picnic or go canoeing.

The mountains are calling and Horseshoe Lake speaks a universal language – turquoise AF water. Here, the Instagram pictures are mint, the water is cold and the day is always too short. If there’s only one place your going to check out this summer, make it this one

Rock beaches have a bad rep, but we promise this one is worth visiting. Located IN Calgary city limits, Pearce Estate Park actually has a few little spots where slower water has pooled just enough to cool off on a hot day. Can you get in a full backstroke? Not really no, but it’s close, it’s fun and it’s the Bow!

If you guys have seen the forecast for the next few weeks, then you know how outrageously spicy it’s going to be. The place to be when that heat wave hits? Forgetmenot Pond. This water is as clear as it gets and the water? Well, it’s damn near freezing, but it’s worth checking out!

Sandy Beach is one of Calgary’s most popular natural ‘beaches’ (if you want to call it that). Though it certainly doesn’t precede t’s name, it is still a really great place to go on a hotter day. Bring the dog, the kids, a few snacks and/or your friends and you’ve got it made.

Can’t get enough of Alberta’s insanely blue water? Barrier Lake is another mountain spot that you have to check out at least once. Unfortunately, its day-use area currently closed due to construction but definitely keep this one in your back pocket!

Castle Falls. Is it cold? Heck yes, but is it another one totally worth checking out? Abso-freaking-lutely. This summer grab an inner tube, some sunscreen and a towel, then check out one of the most beautiful places (maybe in the whole province). You won’t regret it!
