One Elephant Car Wash sign is returning to South Lake Union

It was a heartbreaking day when we learned earlier this year that one of Seattle’s most iconic businesses was closing for good. South Lake Union’s Elephant Car Wash has been a staple in the city since the 1950s and its sign is one of the most photographed landmarks in the city. But get excited because the smaller sign is returning to South Lake Union.

As you probably remember, owner Bob Haney donated the smaller sign to Amazon when the business closed. And in a sweet gesture, Amazon is placing the sign in front of its reInvent tower for all of Seattle to see. If you don’t know where that is, it’s the northeast corner of Seventh Avenue and Blanchard Street. Plus the sign has been professionally restored and will light up just like the good old days. So get your cameras ready to see this piece of history in its new home.

If all goes according to plan, you could see the sign in its new home as soon as June of this year. But what’s even better is that the site will also feature a plaque detailing the history of the sign and its creator Beatrice Haverfield. This way the history of the sign will be preserved and properly remembered for generations to come.

We hope that this exciting news helps you all start your week on a high note. And while we’ll miss seeing the sign in its original home, we’re happy that it’s being returned to the outdoors where it belongs. If you’d like to learn more about the Elephant Car Wash and its future you can click here.
