A first look at Calgary’s mesmerizing new immersive gallery, Quantum Sandbox

Escape, play, learn and evolve. Calgary’s Telus Spark Science Centre is kicking off the spring season with a stunning gallery where adults and kids of all ages can interact with a hypnotic world where physics and culture collide – and you won’t want to miss it.

A collaboration of many minds, Telus Spark worked with everyone from Kainai Elder Dr. Leroy Little Bear and musicians, to Siksika physicist Rob Cardinal and local mathematicians to create the Quantum Sandbox – an immersive gallery that transcends time and space.

From bright colours to unusual shapes, almost every projection within this 3,000 square foot playground will move and change along with guests as they walk, run and step from corner to corner.

Inspired by the 5 principles of quantum physics, this 25-minute experience will immerse guests into a digital realm where everyone is interconnected – but as Cardinal told Curiocity, you don’t need to know anything about the absorption & emission of spectra to enjoy it.

In fact, while he hopes that it inspires children – especially those with an indigenous background – to dabble in science, he says that it’s the human aspect of the gallery that will likely hit home.

“This interactive display really just shows that your emotions and actions affect others,” he said. “It’s a real visual treat!”

With music from Siksika’s Young Warriors and graphics by Bamff, this unique exhibit was created with the hopes that people will walk away with a better understanding of not only themselves and physics but the world and people around us.

“It’s a good entryway for people to begin to understand indigenous science,” Indigenous Engagement Specialist and Educator Kori Czuy, Ph.D. said.

“We are all equal within the circle, we are all connected. We are all made of stardust, we’re all the same – there’s nothing living or non-living, everything is in movement and is a collection of particles … That’s what quantum is.. and it’s a great way to start having different conversations.”
