It’s not over: Vancouver is expecting more winter weather with snow & freezing rain

To say that Metro Vancouverites were unprepared for the ‘cold weather snap’ this weekend would be putting it mildly, and it’s still winter, so there is more to come! Here’s a look at the Vancouver weather this week.

As for this week, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a Special Weather Statement on Monday, January 15th, forecasting snow and freezing rain across Vancouver. So don’t pack away your winter gear just yet!

This week’s forecast

On Tuesday, January 16th, a low-pressure system will reach the coast from the west, interacting with the arctic air over the south coast to “bring snow to most areas.”

Later that evening, snowfall is expected to start, continuing into Wednesday morning, according to the statement. As the temperature will be around zero degrees, the type of precipitation is still up in the air.

“Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Greater Victoria, and the Malahat Highway could experience freezing rain mixed with the snow overnight Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Greater Victoria will likely see a transition to rain or showers on Wednesday,” the statement reads.

When will Metro Vancouver warm back up?

As for when Metro Vancouverites can expect it to warm back up, the ECCC forecasts temperature highs between 5 and 7°C between Thursday, January 18th and Sunday, January 21st.

So by the second half of the week, it looks like temperatures will be gradually returning to normal – with Raincouver back in full swing.

And there you have it, Vancouver. Until then, stay warm and dry, and opt for transit if you can.

Stay safe out there!
