Look it’s not unusual for Seattle to top the national charts for being pricey. These days we’re up there with other cities like New York and Los Angeles. But when it comes to global costs of living, Seattle has to pale in comparison, right? Wrong, Seattle just ranked as having one of the highest costs of living in the world, let’s check it out.

Mercer just announced the results of its 2022 Cost of Living Survey and the results are for the most part pretty unsurprising. These are the top ten cities with the highest cost of living in the world:

  1. Hong Kong, Hong Kong (SAR)
  2. Zurich, Switzerland
  3. Geneva, Switzerland
  4. Basel, Switzerland
  5. Bern, Switzerland
  6. Tel Aviv, Israel
  7. New York, New York
  8. Singapore, Singapore
  9. Tokyo, Japan
  10. Beijing, China

New York is truly the shining star in this survey. Why you ask? Well, “New York City is used as the base city for all comparisons and currency movements are measured against the US dollar.” The survey includes over 400 cities throughout the world meaning that they all get compared to the Big Apple. This year is no different with this year’s ranking including 227 cities across five continents.

So where does Seattle sit in all this? We’re in the top 50 sitting pretty at number 45. While it may feel a tad bit discouraging to live in such a pricey place, Seattle is beat by many other US cities including Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, Boston, Washington, DC and more.
