There are twin waterfalls flowing in an Ontario city you probably didn’t expect

Chasing waterfalls? We sure are! If you’re looking for a new one to explore this summer, head towards Canada’s capital city. Not only will you find a stunning display of rushing waters, but you’ll actually enjoy two, aka twins. Feast your eyes on the magnificent Rideau Falls at Rideau Falls Park and Green Island.

Rideau Falls

Right in Ottawa, Ont., is where you’ll find this set of twins. According to the National Capital Commission (NCC), the 2.89-hectare park where they are located was once the site of an industrial area powered by the falls.

“Rideau Falls Park was developed after the Second World War, when the area was acquired by the federal government and cleared of industry,” shares the NCC.

Now this park is the site of several commemorations such as the Mackenzie-Papineau Monument, the Commonwealth Air Force Memorial and the National Artillery Monument.

And of course, the famous Rideau Falls.

The NCC notes that the Rideau Falls mark the dramatic point where the Rideau River meets the Ottawa River. Cascading from a height of 11 metres, these elegant, curtain-like falls create a breathtaking natural spectacle that’s as powerful as it is picturesque.

And you’ll find Green Island dividing the two. If you look just south of this, you’ll spot Ottawa’s Old City Hall too.

As previously mentioned, there are a few commemorations in Rideau Park itself, but Green Island has some too.

One of them pays tribute to John McRae, the poet behind the famous poem “In Flanders Fields.”

The next time you’re in Ottawa, don’t just stick to the usual touristy spots; explore the wonderful city and all it has to offer.

Don’t you just love it when history and nature intertwine? We definitely do!
