It’s a hate-love relationship with Toronto’s most notorious trash gang – raccoons. And that’s a fact more so now considering a raccoon is the culprit behind the huge power outage that left thousands in Toronto in the dark, on Thursday night.
Raiding our garbage bins wasn’t enough, apparently! Just before 8:30 PM, Hydro One shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating they were on their way to the scene to investigate the cause of the outage.
According to Toronto Hydro, the outage knocked out electricity for those living in the boundaries of St Clair Avenue W to Gerrard Street W and Avenue Road to the Don Valley Parkway.
Though significant, it wasn’t long until they determined what made thousands of residents lose power.
“Crews have determined that a raccoon made contact with our equipment at a downtown Toronto station,” shared HydroOne in an update.

Power was restored to residents at around 10:30 PM. Though it is funny knowing a raccoon was behind all this mess, the outage did cause some stressful situations.
Toronto Fire Services stated that their crews were responding “to a higher number of elevator rescues in these areas.”
And of course, the TTC’s Line 1 had no service between Union Station and Bloor-Yonge Station during that time.
However, things are now running smoothly, and as for the raccoon, we hope it’s okay!
