This trail near Calgary has 360-degree views & its open for spring hiking

While some in Calgary opt for spring hiking in hopes of reduced crowds, anyone who loves being in the mountains is in it for the views. This trail is less than an hour from Calgary and delivers on every single count… if you don’t mind a bit of a challenge.

Prairie Mountain is an 8.4-km out-and-back trail with an elevation of 675 m near Bragg Creek. While it’s considered to be a moderately challenge route, it more than makes up for the sweat you’ll put into it.

The View

This trail is pretty popular thanks to its proximity to the city, but the real showstopper is the 360-degree views from the top. You’ll be able to see the many mountain ranges to the west and the prairies to the east. If it’s a clear day and you really squint, you might even spot downtown Calgary!

The out-and-back trail takes an average of four hours to complete. Great for fitting into a morning and leaving enough time to stop for lunch on the way back.

Prairie Mountain trail is open year-round, but make sure you’re equipped for the weather. Most of the hike is unshaded, but there might be mud and slush in the shoulder seasons. This time of the year is likely to still have snow and ice, so make sure you have spikes! Bring along your furry friends, but remember to keep them on-leash.

If you’re looking for spring hiking ideas near Calgary, you won’t be disappointed with this one!

Getting There

If you’re coming from the Calgary ring road, take the 22x exit towards Brag Creek. Continue onto Highway 22w and continue again as it turns into AB-66. Keep going until you reach the Elbow Falls Parking Lot on the left side.

Park at the Elbow Falls Parking Lot and cross the road (carefully) to find the Prairie Mountain trailhead.

As with any spring hiking around Calgary, make sure to check the Alberta Parks website before you leave for the most up-to-date conditions. Pack some snacks, dress in warm layers, and have microspikes on hand in case you hit any icy bits.

Happy adventuring!
