This Ontario beach village is known as the “jewel” of it’s region

Ontario has some adorable beach villages and Port Burwell is certainly on that list. Located on Lake Erie’s north shore in Elgin County, Port Burwell has sandy beaches, a historic lighthouse, a provincial park and so much more.

According to its website, “Port Burwell is often referred to as the jewel of Lake Erie’s north shore, and with its Blue Flag certification for water quality and environmental protection, it’s easy to see why!”

“In addition to the clean, sandy beach, you’ll find hiking trails, camping, a cold-war era submarine, a marine museum and historic lighthouse, two marinas, and a provincial park.”

Want to get some exercise along the waterfront? Bring your bikes and check out Port Burwell’s Great Waterfront Trail, a scenic route which runs extends along the Canadian Shores of Lake Erie.

The Port Burwell Lighthouse is another must-visit while in the area. The lighthouse was constructed in the 1840s and is one of the oldest and most historic marine sites on Lake Erie. The lighthouse was restored in 1986.

There’s also a provincial park to check out – Port Burwell Provincial Park.

The park is known for its 2.5 KM beach and being a popular summer destination thanks to all its exciting activities such as fishing, boating, bird watching and hiking trails.

Finally, if you want another little slice of history, check out the HMCS Ojibwa Submarine Tours.

Guests are welcome to explore a historic Oberon Class Cold War Submarine HMCS OJIBWA. According to Port Burwell, it is “quite simply the most unique and exciting experiential tour around.”

The sub stands 297.5 feet long, five stories high and there are guides to take you around for an in-depth submariner tour with numerous stories of those who served!
