This Ontario town is home to a polar bear habitat

Nestled in the heart of Northern Ontario, Cochrane is a hidden gem that deserves a spot on your travel radar. This charming town is not just about picturesque landscapes; it’s also a Polar Bear destination. Here’s what to know.
About seven and a half hours away from Toronto is Cochrane. Here you’ll find Greenwater Provincial Park, the Tim Horton Museum and a Polar Bear Habitat.
One of Cochrane’s crown jewels is the Polar Bear Habitat, the only facility in the world dedicated exclusively to the care and rehabilitation of polar bears, according to the Town of Cochrane website.
It is currently home to Ganuk, Henry, and Inukshuk! The habitat spans over 24 acres of pristine, sub-arctic terrain, offering these polar bears a life as close to their natural environment as possible.

“We do not partake in captive breeding, rather we focus our efforts on increasing welfare standards and participating in conservation projects, which help us to gain a greater understanding of their species,” shares the habitat.
They are open every day from 9 AM to 5 PM so if you want to pay them a little visit, the habitat recommends arriving early in the day, as the bears are a little more active at this time.
“While we cannot guarantee you will see a bear, visitors are encouraged to allow themselves time to explore our expansive grounds, learn about polar bears through the interactive displays in the Viewer’s Building, and attend the educational talk presented by our animal care staff,” adds the habitat.
But Cochrane has more to offer than its famous bears. The town is steeped in both history and modern amenities.
The Tim Horton Events Centre and the Tim Hortons Museum are also a focal point for the community, while the surrounding natural beauty provides endless opportunities for outdoor adventures.
Whether you’re fishing, kayaking, or camping in the expansive Boreal Forest, Cochrane offers something for everyone, no matter the season.
Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this town promises a unique look at Northern Ontario life.
